How did you decide what kind of payment system to setup? The low cost route would have been Paypal only. Did you start out with just Paypal, or did you do the whole nine yards up front? You must have signed up with a credit card processor and also got an SSL cert for your domain.

When starting a new site which you don't know how much traffic to expect, it can be hard to guess how much you should pay for things - especially when they have a minimum monthly charge to them.

Great post. Here is some caution we all need to look out for!!

The beautiful thing about a good domain name is that every domain name is unique and can be a sustainable competitive advantage even for the “little guy”.
But beware, I do put a word of caution out into the community that there are a lot of registrars that when you type in the name to see if it is taken, they immediately register it for themselves (if you don’t). This is a disgusting practice and from what I understand http://www.rnrstuff.net does NOT do this. That is why I use them to do the first uploads. Cheaper than almost all the big time sites but honest thus this far.

The domain business is still “finding its way” so be careful out there.

Yeah, I'd seen that you said you were using affiliate links I was just curious that they didn't appear for each domain name in the "details" dropdown (or slideback or whatever the jQuery reveal bit is called). That means I'd have to re-enter the domain in the search box in order to buy it ... also you said folks have bulk bought don't earn you anything, I'm not quite at that quantity but I wouldn't use a new domain registry but would favour one of the 3 I'm already using. Having more than one option for purchase would work with me.

I imagine that you could establish volume for the pre-registered folks and then go to the domain sellers and say if you want this traffic I need some affiliate money. However there does seems to be slicker equivalents out there to your offering.

I don't get it, I click on a domain name and it says "available". How do I buy it then, there's no "buy" button?

If the button sin't there then I'm goign to go elsewhere. Indeed it should have "buy with..." and then a series of buttons for different domain sellers so I can go to one I've used before.

Scratch that ... [nips off to create Domain Dove]

Great post and a lot to learn in 6 weeks. I've had a number of projects fail and land on their face to learn the same things. I still haven't got a handle on the sleeping, maybe one day.

Best of luck with domainpigeon.com, I like it so far. :)

Great post! I've heard a lot of this advice sprinkled around various parts of the web, but there's nothing like reading about a real-world example of that advice in action.

I loved the points about substance over design, narrowing (and defining) your audience, and determining how you measure success.

Good luck with Domain Pigeon and thanks for posting this!

Rating stuff is for procrastinators. Perhaps that's a different audience than people looking for a domain name, and could be serviced separately.
